Routine Perioperative Investigations
Perioperative investigations for thoracic surgery, cardiac risk factors, and diabetes are covered elsewhere.
Considerations for use of perioperative investigations:
- Existing medication
- Pregnancy testing
- Consider for all women of childbearing potential if there is any possibility of pregnancy
- Extent of surgery
Testing in Specific Surgical Populations
Consider both the grade of surgery and the medical status of the patient:
Grade | ASA 1 |
---|---|
Minor | |
Intermediate | |
Major | - FBE - UEC, if risk of AKI - ECG, if >65 |
Grade of Surgery
A reference for the above table, with examples:
Surgical Grades | Example |
---|---|
Minor | - Excision of skin lesion |
Intermediate | - Inguinal hernia - Tonsillectomy - Knee arthroscopy |
Major | - Abdominal hysterectomy - TURP - Thyroidectomy - Bowel resection - Cardiac surgery - Thoracic surgery - Spine surgery - Joint replacement |
